Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about culturalization, our process, and working with Geogrify.

What is content culturalization?

Content culturalization is the process of proactively adapting digital content to meet the cultural expectations, sensitivities, and legal requirements of target markets — going far beyond language translation to address the full cultural context of imagery, narrative, humor, symbols, values, and design.

While localization makes content legible in a new language, culturalization makes it genuinely relevant and appropriate to a new audience.

How is culturalization different from localization?

Localization focuses on linguistic adaptation — translating and formatting text so it reads naturally in a target language. Culturalization examines the content itself: will this symbol be offensive in Japan? Will this character resonate in Brazil? Is this government depiction legal in Germany?

Localization is about words. Culturalization is about meaning, context, and cultural fit.

When in the development process should I engage Geogrify?

Ideally, as early as possible. Pre-production and early alpha are ideal because changes are least expensive at those stages — swapping an asset or adjusting a narrative beat costs far less than revising finalized art or re-recording dialogue.

That said, we provide value at any point in development, including rapid pre-launch audits to catch critical issues before gold master.

What markets and regions do you cover?

We cover all major global markets, including Asia Pacific (Japan, China, South Korea, Southeast Asia), Europe (including Germany, which has specific content regulations), the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America, and North America.

Our work draws on a network of regional expertise covering over 70 countries and cultures.

How long does a cultural audit typically take?

It depends on scope. A focused single-market audit on a defined game section can take 2–4 weeks. A comprehensive multi-market audit of a large-scale title typically runs 6–12 weeks.

We scope each engagement carefully based on your project size, content volume, target markets, and timeline. Reach out and we can give you a more accurate estimate.

What does the deliverable look like?

You receive a detailed report including an executive summary, asset-level findings with severity ratings (critical, high, medium, low), specific recommended alternatives where content may need adjustment, and a prioritized action plan to guide your team.

Reports are structured to be immediately actionable by your development, localization, and QA teams.

Do you work with indie studios as well as large publishers?

Absolutely. Culturalization matters for games of all sizes. A culturally insensitive depiction in an indie title can go viral just as fast as in an AAA release.

We offer services scaled to different budgets and project sizes — reach out and we'll find the right scope for your project.

What happens after the audit — can you support implementation?

Yes. Many clients engage us through implementation as well — reviewing revised content, answering team questions, and validating changes before submission.

We can also provide ongoing advisory support across a studio's project slate, helping build internal cultural intelligence over time.

Do you sign NDAs?

Yes, and we do so routinely. Confidentiality is central to our practice. We're happy to review and sign your NDA before any project details are shared. Our work is covered by strict confidentiality agreements as a standard part of every engagement.

Can you review content that has already been localized?

Yes. We frequently audit content that has gone through localization. In some cases, the localization process itself can introduce new cultural concerns — idioms chosen, images adapted, or dialogue rewritten in ways that create unintended issues.

Our review catches these as well as any issues present in the source content.
